Disability benefits

Disability coverage provides you with a portion of your income if an illness or injury prevents you from working. Dell offers two types of disability benefits: short-term disability (STD) and long-term disability (LTD).

Short-term disability

Dell pays the full cost of the premiums for STD coverage, and you are automatically covered as shown below. Dell's STD coverage is administered by Prudential Sedgwick. This table shows how the STD program pays benefits:

If you're a Dell team member
Eligibility You're eligible to receive STD benefits after working at least 30 calendar days.
Waiting period (applied each time per incident in a 12-month period) Benefits are payable after 7 calendar days. Vacation or personal business allowance (PBA) or PTO (Dell Services Federal Government [DSFG]) time must be used during the elimination period for the first claim only.

Life and accident insurance

Dell provides basic employee life and accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D) insurance coverage at no cost to you. You can also purchase supplemental life insurance coverage on yourself and your family. Life and AD&D insurance is administered by Securian Life.

Basic life and AD&D insurance

You do not need to enroll in basic life or AD&D insurance — coverage is automatic. However, you still need to elect a beneficiary and designate whether or not you're a tobacco user. Coverage includes:

Employee basic life
(administered by Securian Life)
1x your benefit-eligible earnings ($1 million maximum) (You must pay a legally required imputed income tax on any value of coverage greater than $50,000.)
Employee AD&D
(administered by Securian Life)
1x your benefit-eligible earnings ($1 million maximum)
Employee business travel accident
(administered by ACE USA Accident & Health)
3x your benefit-eligible earnings

Supplemental life insurance

This coverage pays benefits in addition to basic employee life insurance to help protect your family in the case of unforeseen events. Dell has negotiated special life insurance rates from Securian Life to help keep costs down. To see your rates, visit Your Benefits Resources™ website (@ Work | Log in ).

You can buy supplemental life insurance coverage for yourself in amounts up to 8x your benefit-eligible earnings (in $1,000 increments, up to a maximum of $3 million). If you make your election within 31 days of your new hire date, you can elect up to the lesser of 3x your benefit-eligible earnings or $500,000 without having to provide evidence of insurability (EOI). All other supplemental life insurance elections require EOI and must be approved by Securian Life before coverage becomes effective.

Do you need supplemental life insurance?

Experts suggest that a family should have minimum life insurance coverage of 4x annual pay. On average, Dell team members carry less coverage than is recommended, and depending on your financial situation, you may need more. Consider:

  • What would happen to your family if they lost your income?
  • How would they pay the bills, mortgage and college expenses for the kids?

Securian Life has information and a calculator to help you choose the level of coverage you need. Learn more.

Keep in mind: Getting coverage today — while you're healthy — means you won't run the future risk of being denied coverage by Securian Life (under Dell's benefits) because of a health condition that could pop up tomorrow.

Don't forget to protect yourself

What would happen to you if your spouse or domestic partner or child died? Could you make ends meet on only one income? What about expenses if a child died? You can protect yourself financially by purchasing supplemental life insurance for your spouse or domestic partner and children at affordable rates. You can purchase coverage for your:

  • Spouse or domestic partner of up to 3x your benefit-eligible earnings, in ½ x pay increments, to the maximum of $500,000. (To cover your spouse or domestic partner, you must elect supplemental life insurance for yourself in an equal or greater amount.)
  • Eligible dependents in increments of $5,000, $10,000 or $15,000 per child. (To cover your child(ren) you must elect supplemental life insurance for yourself.)

Things to know about life insurance

  • You must complete an evidence of insurability (EOI) form when enrolling in supplemental life insurance at any time after your new hire eligibility period. The EOI form is also required to increase your supplemental life insurance coverage and it's available online for seven days after you enroll. After that a paper copy is mailed to your home.
  • Eligible benefit earnings are your salary and targeted commissions only. Bonuses, overtime pay and extra compensation are not included.
